Point of View & Characters

The point of view in The House on Mango Street is in 1st person told by Esperanza.

The Characters include:

1. Esperanza: The novels narrator that is approximately 12 years old, she loves to write, and dreams her own house. Her name mean "hope" in Spanish. 

2. Mama: Esperanza's mother, from the United States. She is a very strong women, but influences Esperanza very little but does comfort her.

3. Papa: Esperanza's father, that is from Mexico, that works most of the time and is rarely home.

4. Carlos and Kiki: Esperanza's younger brothers, she explains that they live in a different male world, and only talk to her inside of the house.

6. Nenny: Esperanza's little sister that she usually takes care of. She is very pretty, and a dreamy girl but does cause Esperanza some embarrassment.

7. Rachael and Lucy: Esperanza's best friends. Lucy is the older sister, and Rachael is the younger sister.. both Mexican-American.

8. Cathy: Esperanza's first friend in the neighborhood, but moves out soon after Esperanza's family moves in.

9. Meme Ortiz: A new neighbor in Cathy's house.

10. Alicia: Esperanza's friend that works hard and hopes to change her life.
